MLA is a Medical licensing assessment, required to create confidence in the minds of doctors willing to work in the UK irrespective of their country of education and training. From 2024, Doctors giving PLAB will require to take MLA while registering with a license to practice in the UK. In short, UK medical students will require to pass MLA (a part of their medical education) to practice in the UK. AKT and CPSA are part of the MLA. AKT refers to applied knowledge test while CPSA refers to Clinical and professional skills assessment. The medical degrees in the UK will include this mandatorily from 2024-25. It means before joining medical registration to the GMC, it is important, to pass the MLA, which would be included, in the medical degree in the year 2024-25. Clearing and appearing, both the assessment parts, is crucial, in the final exams. The dates are, selected, by the respective medical schools.
· AKT is an online computer-based exam wherein multiple-choice or choosing the alternatives questions are involved. It helps candidates to learn to apply medical knowledge in different scenarios.
· The clinical and professional skills assessment is a practical knowledge testing exam. OSCE, OSLER are some of the other names for CPSA. It is, conducted, to enable candidates to understand the practicality of the clinical requirements.
The Medical licensing agreement is, designed, to secure the patient's safety. The scores of MLA won't be used, in the foundation training selection process of medical graduates. It is a pass/ fail assessment and has nothing to do with the foundation training selection process. General Medical council wants candidates to be fit for practice. The replacement of PLAB by a new MLA (Medical licensing agreement) will be applied, to graduates from 2024/2025. The PLAB is taken, by IMGs i.e international medical graduates.
