Medical Licensing Assessment - A Complete Guide!

Medical Licensing Assessment is a new exam that will be introduced to all international applicants and UK medicine graduates soon. Basically, it is a replacement for final medical exams.

Two Sections of MLA Test

This test is also known as the MLA exam and divided into two parts:

One is a computer-based test that is popular as an applied knowledge test and the other is a clinical and professional skills assessment.

Main Moto of the Medical Licensing Assessment

The main objective of the Medical Licensing Assessment is to provide a standardized way of evaluating all doctors in the United Kingdom, which in turn will ensure patient safety.

It’s Pass/fail

The Medical Licensing Assessmentis not designed to rank Medicine graduates and scores won’t be used in the Foundation Training selection process. The final result is either fail or pass.

When Does It Come Into Effect?

According to the latest update, this new medical exam will take into effect from the year 2024-25 onwards. This means that you’ll have to pass the Medical Licensing Assessment to join the medical register.

How MLA is different from other medical exams?

With the Medical Licensing Assessment or MLA test, all medical graduates sit in the applied knowledge test (AKT) and a clinical professional skills assessment (CPSA) test at their Medical School and if they clear both of the tests, then they can apply for provisional registration on the GMC Medical Register. As a result, they are qualified for Foundation Training.

Does This Impact Foundation Training Selection?

Well, the good news is that changes to the Medical Licensing Assessment don’t have any impact on the Foundation Training selection. It is simply a pass/fail test, and selection for Foundation Training remains the same.
